When to call a plumber
Dealing with a few plumbing issues around the house, nothing major, just a dripping faucet, a slow draining sink, and a toilet that runs occasionally. They seem like simple fixes, but I have read that small problems can sometimes be signs of bigger issues, especially in older homes. For those who have had similar experiences, how do you tell the difference between a quick DIY job and something that actually needs a professional to look at? I am trying to avoid making things worse or ignoring something that could cause damage later on. Would appreciate any advice on when it is better to just call someone rather than try to handle it myself.

I used to assume that any plumbing problem I could see was the whole problem. A drip was just a drip, a slow drain was just a slow drain. But after a couple of those so called simple fixes did not hold up, I started paying more attention to how often the issue came back and whether there was any hidden damage. A post on https://geekmamas.com/2026/06/30/local-plumbing-know-how-what-actually-fixes-common-home-issues/ explains why small issues in older homes are often signs of deeper problems. I realized that in older houses especially, pipes and fittings can be worn or poorly installed, and a quick patch might just be a temporary mask for something deeper. Now I try to look at the bigger picture and consider whether the fix is actually solving the problem or just buying time.
