In a time when nature seems both under threat and threatening, Vancouver artist Paul Burgoyne seeks to find the raw, colourful and playful beauty in a natural scene or subject. Having spent many summers as a kid in the rough bush far away from technological distractions, Burgoyne sees ecology, or some distant view, as a source of wonder and amazement not to be taken for granted. In his current art practice, Burgoyne explores the pleasure and beauty nature offers but imbues it with heightened colour and unexpected, industrial material choices. He draws his inspiration from the strange incongruity between delicate organic forms and the concrete strength of resin and epoxy. This serves to set up a tension and tactility that draws in the viewer.
