Risks of Unknown VPNs

I recently downloaded a free VPN app just to try it out while working from a café, but after a few days I started wondering if that was actually a good idea. It worked fine at first, but I noticed some random disconnects and it asked for a lot of permissions I didn’t fully understand. That made me think — what are the actual risks of using unknown or less reliable VPN services? Is it just about slower speeds, or can it affect privacy too?

One thing I learned over time is that not all VPNs are equal, and with unknown ones you’re sometimes trading one risk for another. Instead of your provider seeing your traffic, it’s the VPN service itself that handles your data. If it’s not trustworthy, that can be a problem. I started paying more attention to things like encryption, logging policies, and how the service operates. While looking into this, I found some useful general explanations on https://toggle.org/ , which helped me better understand how data is routed and why the provider behind the service matters. Since then, I’ve been more careful about what I install and try to stick with options that are more transparent about how they work.
