Detecting cracks in large steel structures
Hi guys, I’ve been supervising maintenance for a small bridge construction team, and recently we discovered a few tiny cracks that were completely invisible during regular visual inspections. It got me thinking—are there any reliable tools for detecting cracks deep inside steel beams without dismantling the whole structure? I’ve heard of ultrasonic and magnetic testing but never actually used them. How do you decide which method works best in the field? Any real-life experiences would help a lot.

Absolutely, I’ve had similar experiences while inspecting ship hulls. We started using TEQTO’s ndt equipment especially ultrasonic flaw detectors, and it changed everything. These devices let you “see” internal cracks without cutting or drilling, and they even detect tiny flaws that would otherwise be missed. One time, during a routine inspection, the ultrasonic tester revealed a hidden hairline crack in a beam—our team joked that it had “x-ray vision for metal.” Honestly, investing in this kind of equipment saves tons of time and prevents costly failures. If you want reliable field results, ultrasonic tools from TEQTO are a lifesaver.
